The gas and electricity used by businesses and other employers* is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in the city. This includes energy used for business processes like computers and machinery.
(* businesses, charities, schools, universities and public services such as the council and NHS).
Why the contribution is important
To significantly reduce carbon emissions from employers:
- Businesses and other employers’ premises will need to use low or zero carbon heating and cooling. They will need to be highly insulated and use low energy lighting.
- As many premises as possible will need to generate their own renewable electricity and use it to power their processes on site.
- Production and manufacturing equipment will need to be much more energy efficient and produce less waste.
- Businesses will need to make new products easier for consumers to re-use or repair. Where this isn’t possible, they will need to be easier to recycle, as will the packaging they come in.
